Fragrance Creators Association’s Director of Regulatory Science Presents at IFEAT Berlin Conference

Dan Selechnik, Ph.D., Focused on Environmental Sustainability and Biodiversity in the North American Fragrance Industry

WASHINGTON, DC— Today, Fragrance Creators Association’s Director of Regulatory Science, Dan Selechnik, Ph.D., presented at the International Federation of Essential Oils and Aroma Trades (IFEAT) 2023 Conference in Berlin, Germany. Selechnik provided an overview of the evolving North American regulatory landscape, including the association’s work with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, in individual U.S. states, and at Canadian agencies, including Environment and Climate Change Canada and Health Canada.

Of particular note, Selechnik emphasized that the fragrance industry can have a significant role in helping advance environmental sustainability, specifically by bringing newer, greener fragrance materials to market. He further elaborated that in order to do so, the industry requires a regulatory system predicated on risk-based science that takes a comprehensive approach to evaluating fragrance safety.

“Fragrance Creators’ work to empower the fragrance industry’s ability to responsibly advance a sustainable economy embodies the 2023 IFEAT theme: ‘Trade. Tradition. Modern Spirit,’” said Selechnik. “Because the fragrance value chain’s success is dependent on a healthy planet, we heavily invest and deeply understand the connection between nature and science. Our members continually analyze supply chains and make best efforts to ensure natural materials are sourced responsibly so local communities can thrive and native ecosystems are preserved.”

In addition to Selechnik’s presentation, he joined a panel discussion with industry stakeholders alongside Maria Spyraki, Member of the European Parliament.
