Fragrance Creators Statement: Study on Effects of Cleaning, Personal Care Products on Air Quality

Fragrance Creators Association issued the following statement in response to a recent study published in Science, that uses data measurements in Los Angeles, California, to predict possible environmental effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

“VOCs have always been present in our environment and come from a wide variety of sources, including plants and animals, as well as household and personal care products. One source of VOCs in these products is fragrance ingredients, both man made and those found in nature, such as essential oils in the rind of citrus fruit. Most scents and odors are VOCs and are fundamental to the way we smell things and experience life. Additionally, studies show that scents found in nature and in the products we use play a profound role in memory, emotion, and wellness.

It is important for the public to know that fragrances are one of the most highly tested ingredients in the marketplace and are regulated at both the federal and state levels, including in California, where rigorous regulation of fragrance materials has taken place over recent decades.

Materials used by the fragrance industry are evaluated by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), whose research is assessed by an independent panel of experts. RIFM’s safety program has been established for over 50 years. In addition, IFRA sets standards that further specify safe use levels of fragrance materials—a key aspect used in substantiating the safety of scented products.

Fragrance Creators Association will continue to work with experts to evaluate the study in order to provide further context and a holistic understanding of its findings. As always, the fragrance industry welcomes research that contributes to our understanding of the science, and will continue to collaborate with researchers, academics, regulators, and lawmakers to advocate for policies based on sound science.”
