Dear Members,
2023 was a year of embracing impermanence. The dandelion—one of the most successful plants in history— teaches us the power of impermanence. As the flower blooms and matures, transforming into a cloud of white seeds, it highlights the ever-shifting cycles of life in an ever- changing landscape. The dandelion's restorative essence further underscores the inherent ability to heal within nature, encouraging us to navigate with courage and confidence. Each delicate seed that takes flight represents an opportunity for new beginnings, a chance to evolve and flourish.
Together, we led through the complexities of change with ingenuity and determination, carrying seeds of progress that will blossom into the legacy of our association and our industry.
Pioneered EPA Approvals of Newer, Greener Fragrance Chemistries: We successfully partnered with EPA to advance a tailored approval pathway for newer, greener fragrance chemistries within the New Chemicals Program— pioneering a template for our industry as well as the entire chemical sector.
Harnessed Data-Driven Foresights and Custom Compliance Tools: The integration of our data-driven Policy Foresights Program and our bespoke members-only compliance tools have enhanced our advocacy and operational efficiency, saving significant time and costs for both our members and the association. These initiatives have fostered a culture of proactiveness and proficiency.
Championed Responsible Industry Stewardship: We redefined our mission with the Fragrance Creators Responsible Industry Stewardship Pledge. This commitment is designed to support the diverse businesses in our sector while also advancing safety and well-being for consumers and our workers, in harmony with the natural world.
Shaped the Policy Landscape: Our steadfast advocacy has nurtured a more informed stakeholder ecosystem and reinforced our position as the fragrance value chain’s leading advocate. A key initiative includes influencing Congress on modernized cosmetic regulations while laying the groundwork with FDA to advance digital labeling of fragrance allergens. Engaging with the White House, Department of Commerce, USTR, State Department, and others, as well as our meticulous state monitoring and focused lobbying in pivotal states like California and New York, have cultivated policies and regulatory frameworks that are scientifically grounded, beneficial for consumers, and environmentally respectful.
Advanced Consumer Education and Understanding: We expanded The Fragrance Conservatory, now featuring an extensive array of ingredient profiles. Inspiring mindfulness and creative learning, the award-winning site serves as a reference tool for brands to deliver comprehensive, science-based fragrance information to consumers. It also reinforces our industry's commitment to the consumers’ right to know and understand while building trust and fostering a deeper appreciation for fragrance.
In 2024 and beyond, let the dandelion's enduring lessons encourage us to navigate our changing world with grace and a united vision, planting seeds for a flourishing future in our dynamic industry. Your steadfast dedication and trust carry these seeds, turning challenges into opportunities for innovation and success for people, perfume, and the planet.
With gratitude and optimism,
